The Church with the Open Door

SJM: In the heart of the community, with the community at heart

Our church stands at the corner of Martin Way and Beaford Grove, Merton. All are always welcome to attend our services and events. Our church is part of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark, Church of England, a member church of the global Anglican/Episcopal Communion. We are an open, inclusive and welcoming congregation. Our priest is a member of the Society of Catholic Priests in the Anglican Communion.

Our worship is friendly, warm and follows the great Anglican traditions of liturgy, with choir, preaching, and incorporating the great signs and symbols of the ancient and modern catholic style of Anglican services. Incense is used on Sundays and Holy Days and we celebrate the traditional 7 Sacraments as vividly shown in our stained glass windows. Children are always welcome, especially on 1st Sundays when when a traditional Sunday School is offered during the 9.30 a.m. worship.

The Mass, also called the Eucharist, Holy Communion, Lord's Supper, is our central act of worship. It is at the Sunday Parish Mass that we gather in good numbers in devotion and fellowship, the key gathering of the parish community. You are most welcome to join us.

The simple style of St James Church makes the unique art stand out in a glorious way, especially with our Altar Murals of the Resurrection by Hans Feibusch. The impressive baptismal font, the Icon of our Patron Saint, the Banner of St James the Great, the bronze Stations of the Cross and Statue of Our Lady of Walsingham all add to the devotional spirit of our bright and inviting church building.

We have an excellent organist and committed musicians that provide music at our services. The choir welcomes new members at any time with rehearsals on Friday evenings. Of course key to our ministry is to welcome people seeking baptism/christening of children and anyone not already baptised, First Communion and Confirmation, Weddings and blessings, Funerals and Requiems The Vicarage phone number is 020 3016 5156. A priest is usually available Thursdays following the 10 a.m. Healing Mass in the chapel.

ST JAMES is here for all people of goodwill and our Lady Chapel (in honour of the Mother of Jesus) is open daily for people to enter, rest, pray and light a candle.(Closed weekdays 12th to 21st September 2018) Also please help us identify needs in the community. A Prayer Request box is situated on the front lawn.

Come join on our journey of faith. We affirm with confidence: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The Bible is used extensively in our worship and our services stem from what is called Common Worship and on occasion from the traditional Book of Common Prayer. The peace of Christ be with you! All are truly welcome , a place to belong, a place to become.
